The Nematology Laboratory began in 1981, when Dr. Renata Cesar Vilardi Tenente jointed quarantine group of Embrapa Genetic Resources and Biotechnology.

The functioning conditions of the Laboratory were arduously improved with purpose to attend the required nematological analysis of imported germplasm by Brazil, for the genetic breeding program.

Already in 1981, the analysis began after an exaustive literature review regarding each subject. The nematology infrastructure conditions increased each year and at the same time the metodology check was use to diminute risks of introduction into the country of new nematode species.

A great number of undergraduate and graduate students were trainning in this Laboratory.  Today many of them followed a scientific career, and most remained in activities wich are nematodes.

Nowadays, the Nematological Laboratory attends the imported material for research, and also for seed and grain production. The Laboratory does analysis for exportation, when it is required by the countries.

As the Laboratory developed, it became involved with research projects, to attend the quarantine measures related to nematodes, avoiding to cause damage to the national agriculture.
